A reliable four-paragraph shape
Most Task 2 questions work well with: (1) paraphrase the question and state your position, (2) first main idea with support, (3) second main idea or a clear counterpoint, (4) a short conclusion that restates your view without new ideas.
Examiners look for Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. Structure mainly protects coherence — every paragraph should have one job.
- Introduction: paraphrase + clear position
- Body 1: strongest reason with an example
- Body 2: second reason or balanced view
- Conclusion: restate position in 1–2 sentences
Common Task 2 traps
Do not memorise entire essays. Memorised openings that do not answer the question hurt Task Response. Keep examples specific and short.
Aim for a clear opinion even on “discuss both views” prompts — say which side is stronger and why.
